The opening scene has former detective John Rebus in Court, but this time he is in the dock facing a lengthy prison term.

As Edinburgh grapples with COVID, the jury is in a hotel, viewing proceedings via video link; everyone in court is masked, save the Judge and an ailing Rebus, whose mask is in a pocket with his inhaler. She is very different in style to Rebus, but displays the same perseverance and the same ability to get to the truth, regardless of the consequences. The only suspects, those who live in the building, aren’t accustomed to police interrogation Could it be the Russian oligarch? It was a long haul, it was hard graft and frustrating in that sense that you’re never gonna quite make it. In Ian Rankin's latest addition to his Scottish crime series featuring the Edinburgh based retired, in poor health, Detective John Rebus is wonderfully intricate and complex, with a barnstormer of a beginning in which Rebus is in court, shockingly in the dock, but we are given no hint as to what he is charged with.

John Rebus stands accused: the once legendary detective is on trial, facing the rest of his life behind bars. But it all comes together brilliantly, as only Rankin can do with his ability to incorporate current events into his books, and with his trademark dark humour.

The body is that of the night concierge, Dwaine Hogarth, found by his girlfriend who had come to visit in the middle of his shift. I think it’s fair to say that John Hannah isn’t who many people envisage as Rebus but I thought he played the character well anyway and gave quite an in-depth look into Rebus’s inner thoughts and feelings. All of his novels have been nominated for major awards and his work is translated in over 30 languages. The story had pace, it had to being a novella; but I felt I went through a full novel in Gish’s investigation. bestselling author of A SONG FOR THE DARK TIMES 'It's another Rebus novel you can't put down, and Rankin at his most powerful' CHOICE 'Rankin is superb' DAILY MAIL An illegal immigrant is found murdered in an Edinburgh housing scheme. From there follows several paths, Siobhan Clarke is investigating an officer who has been charged with domestic violence and who in turn threatens to spill the beans on corruption in Police Scotland. But if you’re a fan of the books you’ll go oh, that’s from that book and that’s from that book, because what Gregory’s done is taken bits of themes and plots and characters from various books and put them in a blender to make something that works on screen as a single six hour story. A bullet left Big Ger a paraplegic in a wheelchair, and most of the mobster's money-making schemes have been taken over by other people.

I walked the Fife Coastal Path with my old school friend John (it nearly killed me or at any rate did for my feet – one of my toes is still black and another lost its nail entirely). He is known as an officer who often used questionable tactics and it appears that his history is coming back to haunt him. A gleaming residential tower, ‘The Rise’ is newly constructed from steel and blackened glass, standing on a patch of prestigious London real estate. Not without subtitles,” he says, happy to leave the ebook narration to actor Indira Varma, “a great actor. Siobhan meanwhile is working on a case that involves officers at Tynecastle police station long known to be rotten to the core but as yet unproven. No one staggering late at night from any of these establishments could know that so many corpses lay in chilled stillness close by. I take on board everything my wife has said because she reads a lot of books, so I trust her judgement. As a semi-huge James Patterson fan, I recently discovered the Vera series which led me to a new author to discover, Ann Cleaves, which led me here. There are secrets buried or so they thought that if they be brought to light more than reputations are at stake. When the concierge of an exclusive high-rise apartment building is found murdered in cold blood, every resident becomes a suspect.

Ian Rankin is sitting in his high rise flat overlooking Edinburgh talking exclusively to The Scotsman about his new standalone mystery crime thriller, The Rise, his first in ebook and audiobook form. However, I was not saddened when they were wound up as they had run their course and I thought it was best that they finish on a high rather than fading into insignificance. Karen is initially sceptical when an author’s manuscript appears to be a blueprint for an actual crime, but she cannot ignore the plot’s chilling similarities to the unsolved case of an Edinburgh University student who vanished.

Rebus shares top billing this time with Siobhan Clarke, the eager Detective Inspector who has been his long time friend.
