The English Whisky Original Single Malt Whisky, 70cl
About this deal
English Malt is whisky made from a cereal grain and water that has been distilled at least twice in a copper pot still and matured in wooden casks of at least 700 litres for a minimum of three years.
Jim Murray dubbed this European whisky of the year in the 2018 edition of his famous Whisky Bible and no wonder – an elegant expression with an appealing creaminess, and dangerously smooth and drinkable. However, in the past decade or so, a few brave souls have decided that England should be known for distilling whisky as well. It’s here that the spirit adopts its gentle oaky flavour; we don't completely fill the barrel, allowing the spirit to breathe and develop a better flavour. Even the spicy notes have a sweetness to them, with ginger the most obvious among them, and it has a long finish, helped by a slightly oily, viscous feel in the mouth.
It's not terrible, and by that, I mean it's perfectly drinkable, but it's blander than bland and there's far greater pleasure to be found in other whiskies costing nearly 50 notes a bottle. Finished for a year in tawny port casks, this rich, full-bodied spirit is subtly smoky and fruity, with a smooth, oily mouthfeel. While best known for distilling gin, England also has a history of whisky making that dates back to the 1800s. Missing Wine or cases damaged in transit must be reported to us within 3 days of receipt of advice of dispatch.Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez sherries have been used to season some casks used to mature the whisky and they have given the spirit a full array of sherried oak flavours, from chocolate coated raisins and burnt orange to Christmas pudding spices and sweet, syrupy ginger. They offer a variety of English single malt whiskies, as well as smoked and single grain bottles too.
